Last year, lockdown-hit Bristolians were treated to the sight of a porpoise holidaying in Hanham and a small deer causing a bit of stir in Bedminster, Knowle and Totterdown, running around the parks, rivers and roads as if it were completely natural to cross the Wells Road and eat roses in people's back gardens.īut those sightings, along with others of big cats, reptiles, mammals and even - yes - Bigfoot, are not the only time people have been surprised by the fauna on their doorstep. Earlier this autumn, the Avon Wildlife Trust announced that, for the first time in almost 500 years, beavers were living wild and free on the River Avon near Bristol.
